We’ve made it to May! And we’re sure the countdown to summer is on for students, parents, and staff alike. There is much to look forward to during the summer months, and much to gratefully reflect on from another year of God’s grace at Faith West Academy!

Persevere to the Finish: Serve Others with the Spirit’s Fruit

During these last weeks of the school year, we are reminded topersevere and finish strong. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” In these last days of the 2024/2025 school year, let's remember to live out the Fruits of the Spirit and serve one another. Need some ideas? Try some of these!

Write Encouraging Notes
– Leave kind notes or Bible verses on classmates’ desks or lockers.
(Fruit: Kindness, Love)
Help a Teacher Clean or Organize the Classroom
– Offer to sharpen pencils, clean whiteboards, or sort books.
(Fruit: Goodness, Faithfulness)
Pray for a Classmate or Teacher
– Create a "prayer partner" challenge to lift others up in prayer daily.
(Fruit: Faithfulness, Love)
Make Thank-You Cards for School Staff
– Celebrate custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and admin staff.

Include Someone Who’s Left Out
– Invite someone new to join your group at recess, lunch, or during a project.

Reflect with Gratitude: Remembering God’s Faithfulness

As we come to the end of another year, we cannot help but reflect in gratitude on all God has done! Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Lamentations 3:22–23 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Through the highs and lows—joyful events, academic victories, meaningful friendships, and even the challenges—we have seen God’s faithfulness on display.

As we look back, we rejoice in this unchanging truth: His love and mercy have carried us through every moment.

Here’s an end of year challenge for you and your family: create a list of things you are thankful for and ways you have seen God work this school year, and turn it into a prayer of thanksgiving!

Remembering all the Lord has done is what gives us strength and hope for the future.

Growing with God All Summer Long

Don’t forget—spiritual growth doesn’t take a summer break!! Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Think of all the ways you have grown this year! Pray and ask God to continue to work in you this summer. Here’s some ideas to foster spiritual growth over the break:

Join a Vacation Bible School (VBS)
– Attend or volunteer at a local VBS to stay connected with God’s Word and serve others.
Memorize a Verse Each Week
– Pick one verse each week to memorize and reflect on how it applies to your life.
Listen to Christian Music or Podcasts
– Create a playlist of worship songs or find faith-based podcasts for kids, teens, or families to enjoy on car rides or at the beach.
Serve in Your Community
– Volunteer with a church outreach, food pantry, or neighborhood project. Serving others grows compassion and joy.
Have Family Faith Nights
– Pick one night each week for your family to read a Bible story, pray, and talk about what God is doing in your lives.
Read a Christian Book
– Choose an age-appropriate Christian book or biography of a missionary or biblical figure.
Spend Time in God’s Creation
– Go on nature walks and use them as opportunities to praise God and reflect on His creation (Psalm 19:1).
Keep a "God Sightings" List
– Each day or week, write down ways you’ve seen God at work—in answered prayers, small blessings, or acts of kindness.

Walking Through Easter

Happy April, Faith West family! As the weather begins to get nicer and the sun is shining, we are looking forward to the celebration of Easter quickly approaching. This year, let’s prepare our hearts to fully embrace the truth of Easter. Here is a walk through of Holy Week to direct your focus this Easter.

Palm Sunday: Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

On Palm Sunday, crowds of people shouted "Hosanna!" and laid palm branches before Him, recognizing Him as the Messiah (Matthew 21:1-11)
Celebrate the truth of who Jesus is: the Son of God came to save His people and establish His kingdom! Spend time praising Him today!

Holy Monday: Jesus cleanses the temple

On Holy Monday, Jesus cleansed the temple in Jerusalem. He drove out the money changers and those selling animals for sacrifice, consecrating the temple as a place of worship (Matthew 21:12-17)
Today, think about your worship. Are there things that need to be cleared out of your life to be a temple that honors the Lord?

Holy Tuesday: Jesus teaches in the temple

Holy Tuesday is when Jesus was engaged with the Pharisees and Sadducees concerning several subjects including marriage in heaven, paying taxes to Caesar, and the source of His authority. Spend time reading these teachings in Matthew 21:23—23:36; Mark 11:27—12:44; Luke 20:1—21:4
On this day, Jesus also discusses the widow’s donation (Mark 12; Luke 21), was approached by a number of God-fearing Greeks (John 12:20–36), and delivered the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24—25; Mark 13; Luke 21:5–36).

Holy (Spy) Wednesday: Judas betrays Jesus

On Holy Wednesday (or Spy Wednesday), Judas Iscariot agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Read about it in Matthew 26:14-16.
Take time today to reflect on our human tendency to turn away from God and pray for the Holy Spirit to keep our lives centered on Christ.

Maundy Thursday: The Last Supper

Commemorates the Last Supper, where Jesus shared a meal with His disciples before His arrest. Jesus ate with his disciples, washed their feet, established the practice of communion Read it in Matthew 26:17-29 and John 13:1-20.
This story reminds us of the importance of a life of humility, selflessness, and service. How can you practice these qualities with those around you today?

Good Friday: Jesus' crucifixion and death

Good Friday marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Today we reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for the salvation of humanity.
Jesus is arrested, tried, condemned, and crucified (Matthew 27:32-56). His death is the ultimate act of love and atonement for sin.
Participate in a Good Friday service today and reflect on the immense sacrifice Jesus prayed for our sake.

Holy Saturday: Jesus' body lies in the tomb, awaiting resurrection.

Jesus' body lay in the tomb, and His followers were in mourning. It’s a time of reflection and waiting.
Today, rest in the waiting. Reflect on how the disciples and Jesus’ followers must have felt on Holy Saturday, and relate it to our waiting for the return of Christ.

Easter Sunday: The resurrection of Jesus and the victory over death

Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from the dead! This day is the most joyful day for believers, marking Christ's victory over sin and death.
Jesus rises from the dead, appearing first to Mary Magdalene and later to His disciples (Matthew 28:1-10). His resurrection offers Christians hope of eternal life!
Participate in an Easter Sunday service and celebrate the Risen Savior! He is Risen Indeed!!

Beyond the Fast: A Christian’s Guide to Lent, Reflection, and Growth

Earlier this month, you heard others, and maybe even yourself, talking about Lent. Discussions usually revolve around what one has chosen to “give up” for Lent. However, Lent is not so much a central topic in many of our churches today. So, what is Lent? How should we, as Christians approach Lent?

What is Lent?

Traditionally, Lent is a time of fasting, self-denial, and discipline. It takes place six weeks leading up to Easter, and began as a way for those in the Catholic church to remember the importance of repentance. Today, Lent is observed in Catholic churches and some Protestant denominations, however, many Christians choose to give up a habit, eat sparingly, or fast from an activity during the Lent season. The tradition of Lent was formalized at the Council of Nicea in 325AD and is meant to imitate Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness. The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday, where ashes are rubbed on one’s forehead in the shape of a cross. One is meant to observe their Christian walk and make a commitment to turn from sin, especially during the Lent season.

Should Christians Observe Lent?

As Christians, should we observe Lent? Like many holidays, there is no black and white answer as to whether a Christian should or should not celebrate Lent. For Christians, the death and resurrection of Christ is the most important event in all of history. It is important to dwell on the work of Christ throughout the whole year. However, it would not harm one’s faith to pay special attention to the life, death, and resurrection leading up to Easter. When one is saved, their life must truly be changed by Christ and constantly made like Him, not just in the 40 days leading up to Easter. Ephesians 4:22–24 says “to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (ESV). We ought to live in the light of Christ’s work every day, constantly asking the Holy Spirit to make us more like Christ.

Focusing on Christ

Every Christian agrees that we ought to continually seek to become more like Christ. Here are some ideas for you to try during this Lent season to focus your mind and heart on Christ leading up to Easter!

Go through a Bible study that leads up to Easter : there are many studies on the Bible app, or read through a gospel!

Commit to giving up a habit : for example, set aside Instagram and instead use this time to study the Bible, pray, and spend time with God.
Start a journal : commit to spending time each day journaling prayers, create a gratitude journal, or write about what God is teaching you as you study His word.
Do a Bible study on repentance : what you learn will help you to live year-round in repentance and right living with God! Try out a study on the Bible app, or seek out passages on repentance throughout the Bible.
Commit to a healthy habit : for example, exercise, healthy eating, journaling - get creative!

It is not too late! Decide how you will focus your heart and mind on Christ on this season leading up to Easter. Let’s make our school a place dedicated to pursuing Christ-likeness year-round!

Living out Love

Love in the Bible

Did you know the word “love” comes up 551 times in the English Standard Translation of the Bible? The Bible talks about many kinds of love, including love between humans celebrated In the month of February. What else does the Bible have to say about love?

God Love to Us

Discussions about God’s love can quickly become disengaged as we talk about it so often. However, the truths of the Bible are good, true, and continually fruitful in our lives. Looking at God’s love for us is a good reminder of the greatest miracle of our lives! God’s love for us, known as agape love, is the greatest love the Bible tells us about. God’s love for us is sacrificial, unconditional, and intimate.

Romans 5:6 tells us “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” ( ESV ). Earlier in this passage, Paul writes that we probably would not die for someone, even if they were righteous. God’s love, however, is sacrificial and unconditional. He took the initiative in our redemption not requiring anything of us, but sending His own Son to die so that we might be reconciled to Him.
1 John 3:1 says, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are” ( ESV ). God’s love goes beyond a saving love and invites us into His family. God loves us intimately and establishes a deep relationship with us.

Our Love to God

Seeing God’s perfect, immense love for us, how are we to respond? The Bible tells us how God wants us to love Him.

1 John 5:3 tells us that we love God when we keep His commandments . When we have genuine love for Jesus, it will be demonstrated in our obedience to Him.
Mark 12:30 says we are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength . Every aspect of our lives are to be lived in love for God. What are some practical steps you can take today to use your heart, soul, mind, and strength to love God?
Revelation 2:2-5 warns us of the danger of living without love for God. God speaks to those who work hard doing good things, but they have forgotten their first love. It is not enough to do good works or have good intentions. The foundation of our lives must be love for God.

Our Love to Others

The Bible instructs us often in how we are to love others. If our love for God is shown in our obedience to His commands, then our love for God is shown in how we love others.

Colossians 3:12-14 tells us that because we have been made new in Christ, we are to put off our old ways and to put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and forgiveness. By loving those around us in this way, we imitate Christ and show our love to Him
Romans 13:8 “ Owe no one anything, except to love each othe r, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law” ( ESV). Our obligation is to love others. This fulfills the law, as the law can be summed up in the two greatest commands to love God and others.
1 John 4:20-21 conveys the importance of our love for others. If we do not love others, our love for God is not genuine. John goes as far to say that if we do not love others, we cannot love God.

Embracing and Reflecting God’s Love Every Day

This season, let’s look at love in a renewed way. Let’s receive God’s sacrificial, unconditional, and intimate love and rejoice in it! Let’s respond to the magnificence of God’s love by loving Him through obedience, with all we are, and by founding all we do in love for God. Let your love for God be shown in your love for those around you. Put on the ways of Christ and ask God to help you to love others like He does! Let’s make Faith West Academy a place where we experience the love of God, continually learn to love Him, and show our identity in Christ by loving each other.

Goals Built on the Bedrock

2025 Goals Already Fizzling? What Does the Bible Have to Say?

Already we find ourselves about three weeks into January. So, how are those 2025 goals coming? Whether or not you like making goals regularly, almost all of us have visions for the upcoming year we want to see fulfilled. Oftentimes, New Year’s resolutions become fuel for jokes or stereotypes about what we envisioned for our year compared to the reality that unfolds. Sometimes as Christians, we hesitate to make goals when we read “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps ( English Standard Version , Prov. 16:9). It is easy to ask what is the use in making goals that we likely will not hold to? What is the use in making plans when God’s plan for our year will prevail?

Goals for Spiritual Growth

There are many reasons why Christians should make goals:

We are called to CONTINUAL SPIRITUAL GROWTH. “. . . take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ . . . (2 Peter 3:17-18 ESV ). This verse warns us not to fall astray with those who do not seek the law of the Lord. Rather, we must pursue growth in grace and understanding of Jesus. By setting goals for spiritual growth, we acknowledge and examine where we are right now, we look ahead to where we are called to be, and we set goals to see growth in our faith. By growing in our faith, we not only experience a deeper relationship with our Savior, but we are better able to reflect Him, knowing Him better . Charles Spurgeon said “The Bible is not the light of the world, it is the light of the Church; but the world does not read the Bible, the world reads Christians; “Ye are the light of the world.”” When we make goals to grow in our faith, we seek our Savior and become more like Him, fulfilling our calling to be the light to the world.
We are called to PARTICIPATE IN THE WORK GOD HAD PREPARED FOR US TO DO. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10 ESV ). It is true that we do not know the details of what God has planned for our lives. However, we know that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, live out the light of the gospel that others may know Jesus, and commit ourselves fully to the Lord . God has gifted each of us in different ways to serve Him and His kingdom. We must steward our gifts and the time He has given us to do so. Not sure what your gifts are? Ask the Lord to show you where he is calling you to serve, then take a step of faith! Begin serving others in many different ways and see what truly blesses people and brings joy.

God-Centered Growth: How to Set Goals

How can we make goals that will lead to real growth in our lives?

Begin with prayer . Ask God to show you areas in your life He wants to grow. There are so many ways each of us require growth, but allow God to lead your focus and be attentive to His voice.
Think deeply about what your goals entail and your motives . What will growth in different areas look like? What is the desired change? Why do I want to grow? Psalm 73: 25-26 reads “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever ( ESV ). Our ultimate desire is our Savior, our growth is to have more of Jesus, and become increasingly like Him.
Make a plan and set aside dedicated time to learn and grow. This may look like spending time in the Bible in areas that speak to your goals, prayer times talking to God about them and asking for His help.
Finally, accountability is an excellent tool to fuel your commitment to growth and your goals. Get together with a friend and share your goals for the year. Meet frequently to share how you are growing, areas of struggle, and encourage one another. Christians are called to community, we are not left to grow alone.

Building Goals on the Bedrock

Many times we make ambitious goals without much thought or prayer beforehand. Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain ( ESV ). Our goals may stem from good intentions and have good outcomes, but how often do we succeed in them? Unless the Lord is the one working in us and growing us, we labour in vain. Invite the Lord to direct your growth this year and build up your life according to His will. Goals built on the bedrock of God are goals that we will see fulfilled . We do not need to plan our every step this year. We need only to look to the architect of our lives and set goals to follow His blueprint. 2025 is full of opportunity. Seek the Lord in all you do and He will build your life for your good and for His glory. It is our prayer for each staff member, student, and family at Faith West to experience fruitful growth in the Lord in 2025, and that our school would be a fertile place where the Lord’s work would flourish!

The Gift of Giving: Teaching Kids the Joy of Generosity at Christmas

The Christmas season is filled with twinkling lights, joyful songs, and cherished traditions, but at its heart, it’s about the ultimate gift—Jesus Christ. God’s generosity is on full display in the Christmas story: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16). As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, it’s a perfect time to teach children the joy of generosity and the impact of sharing God’s love with others.

At Faith West Academy, we believe that generosity is a way to reflect Christ’s love to the world. Here are some ways families can instill the spirit of giving in their children this holiday season and beyond.

1. Start with God’s Word

Generosity is a key theme throughout Scripture. Teach your children what God says about giving and how it blesses both the giver and receiver.

Acts 20:35 : “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
2 Corinthians 9:7 : “God loves a cheerful giver.”
Matthew 25:40 : “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Read these verses together and discuss what it means to give selflessly, just as Jesus gave Himself for us.

2. Make Giving Tangible

Kids learn best through hands-on experiences. Show them how generosity works in practical ways.

Adopt a Family or Child in Need : Many organizations offer opportunities to provide gifts or essentials for families who might otherwise go without.
Give Time and Talents : Volunteer together as a family—whether it’s helping at a food bank, delivering meals to shut-ins, or serving at church events.
Create Blessing Bags : Fill bags with toiletries, snacks, and warm clothing to distribute to the homeless in your community.

3. Highlight the Joy of Giving

Help your children see the happiness and impact their giving creates.

Encourage Personal Giving : Challenge your kids to use their allowance or savings to buy a gift for someone in need.
Make It a Family Tradition : Start a Christmas tradition where your family gives back in a meaningful way each year, like donating toys or visiting a senior center.
Celebrate the Impact : Take time to talk about the lives that have been touched by their generosity and pray for those they’ve helped.

4. School Spotlight: CPS Christmas Event

This year, Faith West Academy is proud to support the 14th Annual CPS Christmas Event for children in the care of protective services. These children face difficult challenges, and this event is a chance to bring them joy and show them God’s love during the Christmas season. Families are invited to make a donation so gifts can be purchased. On Saturday, December 14th, from 4–6 PM , these children will experience a magical evening, including:

Lunch with Santa
Cookie decorating
Opening presents
And more festive activities!

5. Model Generosity Year-Round

While Christmas is a natural time to focus on giving, true generosity isn’t seasonal. Encourage your children to develop a giving heart throughout the year by:

Supporting missionaries or sponsoring a child through Christian organizations.

Praying for others and finding small ways to bless them regularly.

Reading the Bible can seem like a daunting task. It’s a big book filled with difficult words that spans many years of history and involves deep theological themes. But just because something is intimidating doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. We do hard things in life all the time when we see the value in them, and reading God’s Word ought to be the highest value for every Christian.

Here are a few reasons why studying the Bible is essential:

Personal Growth: When we read the Bible we learn who God is and discover how to have a personal relationship with Him. We grow spiritually, becoming more like Christ.

Wisdom and Guidance: It provides practical wisdom for making good decisions in life.

Understanding God's Plan: The Bible reveals God's plan for humanity and His immense love for us.

Community Building: Studying together strengthens relationships and brings unity to the body of believers.

It’s crucial for teens to learn how to read the Bible on their own because they won’t always have someone around to teach them. Here is a method that is easy for them to follow when approaching Bible study:

Begin by Praying��: Ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts and minds to what He wants to teach us in God’s Word.

Read The Passage Twice��: This helps students to slow down and understand the passage. Reading it out loud and in multiple versions can make this step even more beneficial.

Make Observations��: Every time we read the Bible, God will be reminding us of things we’ve forgotten, and showing us things we haven’t seen before. So, have the student take note of what stands out in the passage, what is interesting, which verse is their favorite, etc.

Ask Questions❓: “Were there any questions that came up as you read the passage?” It could be something as simple as “I don’t know what that word means” to something more complex such as confusion over a particular theological point. Help them ask questions and find the answers on their own, if possible, or encourage your student to go to reliable sources to find answers. Don’t miss this step.

Make a Gospel Connection✝️: Help the students to bring a Christ-centered lens to Bible reading by asking “where do we see Jesus in these verses?” Help them consider how the passage helps us understand who God is, why Jesus came, or the importance of the Kingdom of God. This might be easier to do in the Gospels and a little harder in the Old Testament, but it helps students recognize that the Bible is one big book that tells one overarching story.

Summarize The Author’s Point ��: In this step, the goal is for them to identify a key point of the passage. Instead of asking “What does this mean to you?” have them ask “What is the author trying to say?” As they write a one- or two-sentence summary about the passage, they’re using basic reading comprehension skills while studying the Bible.

Application⬅️: Once time has been spent reading, observing, asking questions, and summarizing, then the student can more accurately identify a personal application to their life. By applying a passage to their lives they follow the advice in James 1:22 and become doers, and not just hearers, of God’s Word.

As teens are equipped with this method, they will develop the skills to read the Bible on their own. While devotional reading is good, the skill to read the Bible for themselves will aid them in life even more. Remind them that it's not just about acquiring knowledge but about encountering the living God, and letting His Word transform their heart and mind, guiding them in every aspect of life. As they start to believe that they can read the Bible on their own, despite the big words and challenging concepts, it will transform their hearts and minds, and grow their faith in Christ.

Christ-Centered Christmas Traditions to Help Your Family Focus on Jesus

Christmas is a busy time…with family gatherings, shopping, cooking and baking, travel, decorating, and so much more! The holidays can easily turn into the most stressful time of the year if we don’t closely guard our time, wallets, and hearts. What is the secret to having a joyful and peaceful Christmas? It lies in keeping our families focused on the miraculous birth of Jesus and the incredible gift that God gave us when He sent us His only Son. By incorporating Christ-centered Christmas traditions into the holiday season it helps us look beyond the tinsel, lights, and busyness to the true meaning of Christmas. Here are some Christ-centered Christmas traditions to help your family focus on Jesus this year:

Set us a nativity set in your home and use it as a visual aid when you teach your children about the birth of Jesus Christ.

2. Read the story about the birth of Christ and talk about what it means. For younger kids, use a storybook bible and for older kids read together from the Scriptures.

3. Give to others - there are so many ways to do this but here are a few ideas to get you started:

Bake some treats and deliver to neighbors, or to thank those who serve your community
Donate clothes or toys to an organization or person in need.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen or children’s hospital.
Bless someone with the “The 12 days of Christmas.” As a family, select another family or individual that you feel could use a little bit of Christmas cheer. For 12 days, leave a small gift on their porch anonymously. Kids LOVE doing things like this, especially if they get to prepare the package, or drop it off and run. You don’t have to stick to the song lyrics. Be creative! For example, for an older person you could write “On the first day of Christmas a surprise was left from me: a box of your favorite tea.” or for a family: “On the fifth day of Christmas, we thought it would be sweet to give you some hot cocoa for a treat.”

4. Hang a Stocking for Jesus - Talk about what Jesus would like in His stocking and encourage your kids to write it on slips of paper and put it in the stocking. Read them out loud on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Some ideas they might come up with include obeying their parents the first time they’re asked, treating others with kindness, sharing with their siblings and showing respect to Mommy and Daddy.

5. Listen to Christmas songs that pertain to the birth of Jesus. These might include Away in a Manger, The First Noel, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Holy Night, and Born Is The King (It's Christmas).

6. Caroling at a Nursing Home or Hospital - Get a group together and bring some Christmas joy to others. Many of these have very few visitors and you might find they sing along! This is a great way to bring Christmas joy to others; lots of people in nursing homes love it especially when children come along, so this is a great activity for the whole family!

7. Visit a live nativity - Living nativity scenes have become very popular over the last few years, and you can probably find one not far from where you live. Seeing actors playing the characters alongside live animals is a wonderful experience for parents and kids.

5 Strategies to Improve your Child's Focus and Attention Span

Many parents, at one time or another, struggle to get their kids to focus...whether it’s barely sitting at the dinner table for five minutes, waiting in line at the bank, or going grocery shopping.

One of the most common problems many children have is focusing on particular tasks for long periods of time. Having a well-developed concentration span, however, is an important key to success at school. The ability to focus on a particular task, project, or lesson has a direct bearing on the amount of information a child can retain and later apply. The ability to filter out irrelevant distraction and focus on a particular project helps develop self-control in a child as well.

There are strategies teachers use in the classroom, such as seating kids away from distractions, making learning fun, varying teaching methods, setting up routines, etc. These are great strategies to use in the classroom, but what about helping your child to build focus, self-control and attention span at home?

Here are five strategies you can use to work with your child at home to improve focus.

1. Play board games for concentration.

Board games are one of the best ways to help your child build self-regulation skills.

The Center for the Developing Child defines self-regulation skills as:

“the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully…the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.”

The more you can help your child practice attention skills at home, the sooner they will be able to apply those skills and concentrate in school.

2. Practice waiting – A LOT – to improve attention span.

The more you can practice waiting with your kids the more they will improve. Great places for practicing self-regulation include the waiting room at the doctor’s office, the grocery store, and the dinner table. At these times, instead of reaching for your phone or electronic device to distract your child, play creative hand games or mind games to improve focus and attention. They only require your body sitting in a chair and nothing else.

Some examples include:

The Thinking Game - have your child describe something and you have to guess what it is
I Spy - you describe something that you see and your child has to guess what it is.
Rock, Paper, Scissors - The rock is a closed fist; paper is a flat hand with fingers and thumb extended and the palm facing downward; and scissors is a fist with the index and middle fingers fully extended toward the opposing player. Rock wins against scissors; paper wins against rock; and scissors wins against paper.
Finger Baseball - this is a fun game of numbers and baseball rules. With two players, one starts as pitcher and the other as batter. Both players throw either one, two, three or four fingers, representing a base. If both the pitcher and batter throw the same thing, it counts as a hit (to that number of bases), if they throw a different number, it is an out. The batter gets three outs, and play continues for nine innings. Runners must advance with new hits. For example, a runner on second goes to third on a single. Keeping track of runners and outs in your head can be a fun challenge!
Chopstick Game - This traditional Japanese game just needs two pairs of hands and some strategy (and simple adding) skills! Good fun for getting kids thinking - and every game ends up differently!

In addition, practice waiting at home for a toy that a sibling has, a special treat like a cookie, or a toy they want to buy at the store.

If waiting is met with tears, sadness or a temper tantrum, be sure to acknowledge their feelings and validate how hard this must be for your child, but stress the need to be patient and wait. Building self-control takes a lot of work – especially for kids!

Finally, have your child practice sitting at the dinner table until everyone is finished. Getting them used to sitting for about 30 minutes can help kids stay focused once they transition into the classroom.

3. Let them experience physical challenges to develop vestibular and proprioceptive senses.

In order for kids to listen, focus, and learn to sit still for a period of time, they must develop both proprioception and vestibular sense by experiencing many physical challenges during childhood. The most critical time to develop a child’s proprioception and vestibular sense is before age six.

Proprioception is what tells you where your body parts are without having to look at them. Some activities to support your child’s proprioceptive input include: Pushing or pulling a wagon, building a fort, raking leaves, shoveling snow, digging in the dirt, carrying buckets of sand or water, giving hugs, kneading playdough, jumping on a trampoline, squeezing a stress ball, or playing Tug-O-War with a stretchy band.

Vestibular sense provides information about where the body is in relation to its surroundings. Some activities that support your child’s vestibular sense include: Spinning in circles, rolling down a hill, spinning on a swing, going upside down, climbing trees, rocking, jumping rope, somersaults or cartwheels, using monkey bars, skating, going backwards, swimming, or dancing.

In other words, let them get outside and be active!

4. Reduce screen time.

Research shows that kids who have more screen-time (or video games) have lower attention spans and lose focus. Michael Manos, director of the ADHD Center for Evaluation and Treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, found that children aged 5 or younger who experience two or more hours of daily screen time are nearly eight times more likely to be diagnosed with focus-related conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He states, “Electronics allow for repeated stimulation and immediate gratification every few seconds. And when we become accustomed to such rapid and frequent stimulation, it can be hard to focus when things in the real world aren’t as mesmerizing.”

So try to cut screen time and perhaps even try a “screen fast” where electronics are completely removed for a longer period of time.

This can result in deeper sleep, a brighter and more even mood, better focus and organization, and a greater time doing physical activity. You just might find that, without screens, your child begins to enjoy the things they used to, is more drawn to nature, and imaginary or creative play returns.

5. Reading to children.

Reading to children is a fun and simple way to build their concentration span on a daily basis. When you read to your child it encourages real attention and listening. The more interested children are in the story, the more they will hang onto every word and pay attention. Stories are also a great way for children to learn vocabulary and develop phonological awareness (through rhyming and repetition). Storytime may just become a favourite part of their (and your) day!

Try these strategies at home to help get your kids to sit at the dinner table longer, wait in line at the post office without a fuss, and experience a seamless grocery store trip. You will also be partnering with your child’s teacher as you both work to build focus, concentration and attention span in your child.

As Christian educators, our desire is to honor God in our teaching, to clearly point students to Christ, and help them think from a biblical worldview. Prayer and devotions are necessary and integral parts of a Christian classroom, but alone, do not equip children to think critically through a biblical worldview. It is therefore important to plan and incorporate biblical integration throughout the academic day.

What is biblical integration?

Some individuals have a distorted idea of what biblical integration in the classroom really means.

Biblical Integration IS NOT:

Including a Bible verse at the top or bottom of a worksheet
Diagramming a Bible verse in grammar class
Reading one or all the Bible verses on horses after a horse unit
Using a science experiment as an analogy to the Christian life
Praying once or several times a day in class.
Having class devotions
Casually referring to the greatness of God during a science lesson
The biblical justification for obedience and working hard

Biblical Integration IS:

Seeing how the topic reveals the character or nature of

God
Creation
Mankind
Moral Order
Purpose

Simply stated, biblical integration is taking a lesson objective and/or lesson outline, and teaching it from a Christian perspective. Every facet of life should be interpreted and lived out within the grand scope of God’s vision.

What is the goal of biblical integration?

The goal of Biblical integration is to help students to think biblically and critically about every subject. More so, we want students to think biblically and critically about every aspect of their lives. Ideally, students should seek to see everything the way God sees it. When students truly understand something from a biblical perspective, they should gain a greater understanding of the character or nature of God, or have a greater understanding of how God designed things to be. One goal in teaching from a biblical worldview perspective is to highlight the truth, and reveal the errors. Through the course of study, students should see the truth of a subject as God sees it, and identify the fallacies, again as God sees them.

Why is biblical integration important?

Young people who learn to look at life with a biblical worldview will think, desire and act in ways that are consistent with God’s thoughts, desires and actions as revealed through scripture. This is so important since many teens today are less Christian and more confused about moral and spiritual truth than ever. With the prevalence and influence of social media and screens in our society, we are seeing an acceleration of ideas, beliefs, and practices that are out of step with what God has revealed in the Bible. At Faith West, our desire is to see the faith of our students strengthened, propelling them into a vibrant, Christ-centered life, where they live with Spirit-empowered influence in their communities.

3 key ways to incorporate biblical principles into teaching

If you are an educator and want to incorporate biblical principles into your teaching, keep the following in mind:

1: Biblical integration cannot be forced. It needs to be natural.

When presented in an unnatural manner, biblical integration is not effective and can have the effect of turning students away from biblical truth. Instead, teachers need to draw lessons from stories and illustrations as Jesus did in His teaching when he used parables. Biblical integration takes place throughout the lesson, and all content is presented from a biblical perspective.

2: Biblical integration needs to have practical life application.

Effective integration of biblical principles needs to go beyond just mentioning Christian values. There needs to be opportunities for students to use and practice them. Teachers should integrate into their lessons and class discussions how experiences can develop Christian values and attitudes, and how to be involved in Christian service. Suggestions can be made, or assignments created that are age-appropriate and would benefit the community.

3. Biblical integration needs to be bathed in prayer and be a calling from God.

Teachers who try to integrate biblical principles into teaching without first seeking God will not be successful. Do not presume that all of the students in your Christian school classroom are Christians. Teachers must pray for opportunities to share the Gospel with their pupils in the classroom. It's crucial to assist students in seeing their need for God and how biblical truths can affect change in their lives. Students should be given ample opportunities to make a decision for Christ. They should also feel welcome to ask questions and express doubts, and learn how to seek answers grounded in truth.

By following these principles teachers will be more effective life-changers for Christ, so that students naturally ask, “How does this content or lesson point to the revealed nature of God and our ability to know and glorify Him?” Christian teachers must first see it as their mission to present biblical truths in a way that affects life-change in the students’ thoughts and actions. Secondly, they must present the material in a natural way that students can practically use. This is essentially the biblical concept of discipleship (Matt 28:16-20) and the results will be life-changing.

11 Tips: Preparing for and Taking College Entrance Exams

It’s spring and that means college entrance exams for high school junior and senior students. Many American colleges and universities currently base student acceptance on ACT and SAT scores. Despite admission policies now striving for a more comprehensive application process by looking at additional student accomplishments and skills, the primary criterion for admission to post-secondary schools will almost certainly always be academic ability.

There are many ways to assist your son or daughter in getting ready for the college entrance exams. Here are a few tips to prepare for tests:

Take advantage of free resources. There are many online websites that have practice questions and tests, along with tips, hints, and advice. Find tools to help build those skills that you struggle with (such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, or essay composition).
Don't procrastinate. Daily practice and exposure to test formatting can help alleviate cramming and stress at the last minute.
Talk to someone who's taken the test. Seek advice from others who have taken the test regarding the best way to approach the test, considering timed sections. Get advice on what to bring along and how to schedule the testing day
Consider tutoring if necessary. Tutoring can help you focus on challenging areas and can also give you testing advice. However, only use tutoring if you are willing to do the additional work since private tutoring can be extremely expensive.

And tips for the student when taking the test:

Select only one answer for each question. When writing exams select one answer for each question. While it may sometimes seem that there is more than one answer, remember that there is only one correct answer, so choose the best answer for each question.
Pay attention! It’s easy to put your answer in the wrong place so pay close attention to make sure you place your answers in the correct number space and section on your answer sheet.
As a last resort, guess! You are not penalized for guessing, as in previous years. However, before guessing, always try and eliminate at least one incorrect answer choice.
Watch your time. The SAT consists of several small, timed tests and it can be easy to lose track of time, so pay attention to how much time is allotted for each test and how much time is remaining as you proceed through each section. Only spend a few moments on the easy questions and no more than a minute or two on the more challenging questions. Pacing yourself requires practice, so practice, practice, practice.
Tackle easy questions first. When taking the SAT, you can save time for the harder questions by doing the easiest questions first, which typically appear in the beginning of each section.
Make sure you understand the question before you answer it. If you've taken a lot of practice tests, you'll be tempted to answer questions you recall from those tests. Make sure to answer the questions being asked and not those from practice tests.
Bring your own watch or timer. There isn't always an accurate clock at the testing center so don't forget to bring your own stopwatch to keep accurate track of time.

A great resource is “ SAT: College Preparation Course For The Christian Student .” The author, Dr. James Stobaugh, offers the Christian student a unique opportunity to be well prepared for the test. Also, students will focus on the spiritual disciplines of Bible reading, study, Scripture meditation and memorization, and prayer. A former SAT scorer, Stobaugh reports the best SAT scores come from students who have serious, disciplined prayer and devotional lives. For this reason, the introduction to each lesson includes Scripture reading and a devotional journaling exercise. Each lesson included in this book has been designed to prepare the student academically and spiritually for the challenge of studying in college or university.

Tips for Raising Your Children in a Digital Age

We are living in a digital age and increasingly depend on digital tools and services to engage, play, innovate, and connect to the world around us. When it comes to children and technology, it can be difficult to know what boundaries to set, how much is too much, and when it crosses the line from being useful and helpful to being addictive and harmful.

The Bad News

There are numerous studies that highlight the negative impact of technology on children and youth. Sadly, these findings reveal some devastatingly harmful effects.

In one large, prospective, longitudinal cohort study , it was found that boys playing violent games exhibited changes in personality over a period of 3 or more years. They become more selfish, less honest, more hostile, and less patient.
Studies have found a strong associations between social media use and adverse mental health outcomes, especially among girls, which may be contributing to the rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among teenagers and young adults.
Studies have shown that children who watch a lot of TV have a greater likelihood of becoming obese. The commercials targeted at children are one of the reasons why. Plus they are focusing more on the media than noticing the internal signs of whether or not they are full.

Setting Boundaries

There are healthy rules you can instill for your children at home. These rules can help responsibly navigate the use of media while maintaining a strong connection to the real world. Here are some tips for raising your children in a digital age.

Set Expectations and Limits
Before any recreational screen time, set out the rule that all schoolwork and chores first need to be completed. I remember my mother saying, “Do what you NEED to do, so you can do what you WANT to do.”
Ask your child what electronic activity they will be doing during their technology time. Set appropriate limits based on age so they can get an enjoyable experience without overdoing it.
Children are exposed to more screens than ever before, including television, computers, gaming consoles, smartphones and tablets. While these tools may offer benefits for learning and exploration, too much screen time can lead to poor social skills and poor social attachments to parents and peers. While technology time limits are up to the discretion of a parent, it is recommended that children under two years of age do not have screen time; for children two to five years old a limit of screen time of one hour a day or less is recommended.
For younger children, keep screens out of their bedroom. This will help them establish good bedtime and sleep habits.
Have Media-Free Mealtime and Family Time
Put all devices aside and focus on food and each other.
Meal time is an important time for family conversations and sharing the day's experiences without media getting in the way.
Teach Children to Surf the Internet Responsibly
The parent can be a guide to the online world, helping their child find appropriate material, avoiding things that aren’t appropriate and understanding what they see. Kids under 10 shouldn’t be using Internet-connected devices completely unsupervised.
Once kids start exploring the Internet on their own, introduce them to kid-friendly search engines
Let your child know not to give strangers any personal information. This is especially true when playing an online interactive game. While they can safely collaborate with others to play online games, they should not be talking about personal information.
Here are some tips for monitoring your child:
Be open about it. Explaining why you want to keep tabs on them can help your kids understand some of the issues they’re likely to encounter online.
Make it part of your family rules to explain appropriate online behavior. This can have a strong effect on what kids do online.
Reward good behavior with increased trust. The more kids feel their parents trust them online, the more likely they are to come to their parents when they have problems.
Allow Tech-Free Hours
Time can be spent reading a book, playing a game, exercising, doing a craft or hobby, or playing outside. Encourage free time to be spent in a family room rather than by themselves in a bedroom.
A good rule to set out is that when your family is in the car together there are no headsets, earbuds, or screens during that time. This is a great time to have conversations together.
Give your child device-free time before bed to allow them time to wind down.

Your guidance and rules can help your children to become responsible technology consumers as adults. Remember leading by example is the best teacher.

How to Incorporate Prayer into your Family Life

As a parent, one of the greatest things you can do is help your child develop a relationship with God through consistent prayer. Pray together as a family and model a life of prayer for them, guiding them in the practice of praying on their own.

Make Prayer a Regular Part of Your Day

We are instructed to “pray at all times and in all circumstances,” so allow your child to see and hear you pray regularly. Making prayer a regular part of your family culture will help make it a normal part of your child’s life.

Pray before meals, thanking God for providing for your daily needs
Pray before driving to school in the morning, asking for protection on the roads and over the upcoming activities of the day
Take time to stop and give thanks in times when God blesses you or answers a prayer
Model prayer in times of difficulty or when seeking wisdom for important decisions
Pray for those in your family and others you know are in need

Be an Example

Model what prayer is - talking to God. How awesome is it that we have access to God’s throne at any time! We don’t need a priest to mediate between us and God. There is no longer a barrier between the Holy of Holies and us. We can talk to Him anywhere, anytime, about anything.

Why do we pray?

It is important for children to understand why we pray. What is the purpose of prayer?

1. We pray to praise God for who He is. It honors God. It shifts our focus towards God and encourages us. It reminds our hearts that heaven rules.

2. We pray in order to confess our sins . Once Jesus has reconciled us to God, we are united with Christ, but we still sin and we don’t want that sin to put a hindrance between us and God.

3. Thank God for what He has given. Having a heart of gratitude at all times is so important. Having a heart of trust leads to peace.

4. To ask God to provide the things we need , because we are completely dependent on Him.

Easy ideas for prayer time with your child:

Sentence Prayers: Take turns praying short, one sentence prayers. It can be as simple as “Please heal Uncle Joe,” “Thank you for giving Fiona a new friend,” or “I’m sorry for losing my temper with everyone earlier today.”

Fill-in-the-Blank Prayers: These starter lines can help to guide and focus prayer times:

God, I love you because…
Thank you God for…
God, please help…
God, I’m sorry for…

Alphabet Prayers: Going through the alphabet, pray for something or someone that starts with that letter. E.g., A - Aunt Elizabeth, B - basketball game, C - courage, etc.

Prayer Board : Keep a dry erase board or a calendar in a spot where everyone will see it and use it to note items the family is praying for together.

Prayer Journal: Consider purchasing a journal for your child to start recording prayers and how God answers them.

Mirror prayers: Using a dry erase marker, write a list of prayer concerns on the child’s bathroom mirror so he or she remembers to pause and pray after brushing their teeth.

The Arts, Creativity and Faith

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” Psalm 8:3-4

My brain loves to get hung up on that secondary thought, “Who are we, that you care for us?” But the artist in me can only imagine what David was looking at. The heavens! No street lights, no cars going by, no light pollution from a nearby city; just the heavens. Orion, the Big Dipper, the Milky Way; maybe even a planet or two. What a glorious sight for David the song writer.

As artists, we also draw inspiration from what we see. The snow-capped peaks of The Rockies, a field of daisies, or the clasped hands of a mother praying. So what moved the artists of different periods to create?

~Renaissance artists were concerned with realism and focused on humanity and the human body. They sought to capture the experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world.

~Impressionists had no desire to paint historical subjects and weren’t concerned with perfection in visual appearances. Instead, they went outside and painted the ever-changing light and how it affected the appearance of a landscape or a person.

~Cubism involved different ways of seeing or perceiving the world around us. Cubists didn’t use perspective or shading in their paintings to make objects look realistic, instead they showed many different viewpoints of the subject all at the same time.

~Even Abstract artists had a reason for what they created. They believed a painting could be appreciated for its line and color alone. It didn’t need to depict a natural object or scene.

Each group had a different opinion about what and why they were creating, but each idea is still based around God’s creation: Light, color, form, texture, pattern. So is there value only in what is produced? Certainly not. There is a greater worth in using the gifts God has given us. When we create, we see God’s artistry displayed in His marvelous creation which is all around us.

Encouraging Reading at Home

A love of reading often starts at home. As parents, we read bedtime stories for years when our children are little, but what happens as they get older? Evenings are busy and homework may take the place of family reading time. How do we continue to foster a love of reading when so many other things compete for their attention?

If your house is anything like mine, evenings are a rush of sports practices, homework, and maybe a few minutes to relax. My kids are asking for screen time or TV time, the dogs need a walk, the dishes need to be cleaned, and lunches need to be made. Sometimes, the last thing on our minds is reading. However, over the past year, reading has become a part of our family routine.

At first, reading time felt forced and the kids fought it. There were no screens, no TV, just twenty minutes of reading a book of their choice. The routine has now become natural. If I’m in the kitchen, I ask if they can read out loud to me. If my youngest needs to read, she may read to her siblings. Hearing and comprehending words builds a child’s fluency and literacy. Do we do this every day? No. We strive for three days a week and reading first on a Saturday or Sunday morning. With three kids, reading may happen in the car, at a football practice, or on a reading app.

While repetitive books can get frustrating to us as parents, a child reading the same book over and over is truly building fluency. If your child insists on reading the same book, great! Start asking them about the book to help their comprehension. If you’re anything like us reading books over and over, I’ve heard the plot of The Wiggle Family enough to ask a few questions!

If a child is interested in a book, let them read it. A magazine? Great. Graphic novel? Go for it. My boys will read about Minecraft. They read about their Fantasy Football players, Astros stats, sports predictions. My youngest is just beginning her reading journey in kindergarten, so she may read to me or we read together at night. I would like to say I do that with her every night, but that is not the reality! More often than not, she’s toting her kindergarten readers to a sports practice! The important thing in all of these examples is that they are reading, building fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Want to make reading a part of family life? Here are some simple tips to help engage your family in reading.

First, model reading. When we put down our devices and engage with a book, we model that reading is for enjoyment and not just homework. My kids know that I always have a book in my purse!

Second, let them choose the book. Let your child choose their book from the local library, and make sure it’s something that interests them, even if it may seem that the book is too easy for them. Help them use the digital card catalogue to search topics that interest them.

Third, make reading time fun! Try reading with a flashlight, a cozy blanket. Reading outside or in the park. Reading in front of the fireplace or in a fort.

Fourth, set a time for reading. Sticking to a routine such as reading after dinner or before TV time for twenty minutes can create a comforting expectation of reading as family time, not a chore. Make a goal to try and read three nights a week.

Most importantly, make reading a fun part of your family, not a chore to be done.

5 Things to look for in a Christian School

The goal of any school is to educate children about life, the world, and their purpose in it. Christian education seeks to teach children about the world God created, how our faith is woven into each area of learning, and how to find purpose and meaning through God’s Will for our life.

Here are 5 questions to ask the administrators of a school in order to determine if that school is built on a biblical foundation and is integrating a biblical worldview into every area of study.

What do they believe about Scripture? Do they use the word “inerrancy” or “authority” when talking about Scripture? Look at the school’s statement of faith but also ask “who has to adhere to the beliefs of the institution?” Do all faculty and key staff members have to agree to that statement of faith? It is important to assess how seriously this institution takes the truths of God’s word.

What do they believe about Jesus? Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). If a school will be teaching about Jesus it is imperative that they believe the truth about Jesus, that he is the only way to salvation.

Are they committed to biblical sexual ethics? In the current culture you can no longer take for granted that someone who affirms the basic elements of Christian theology also agrees with Christian ethics on topics related to marriage, sex, and transgenderism. Their answer will give insight into whether they care more about what culture thinks of them or what God thinks of them.

What is their view on evolution? Do they support and teach theistic evolution? Do they trust God when he tells us how he created the world? Theistic evolution is the idea that God started or directed evolutionary processes. Since theistic evolutionists twist Scripture and regard the Bible as a collection of documents which partially contains God’s Word, it is an important question to ask.

Are they promoting Critical Race Theory? One of the unbiblical ideologies that is infiltrating schools and colleges today is Critical Race Theory (sometimes disguised under the title “diversity, equity and inclusion”). It is a different worldview, with Marxist philosophical roots and anti-biblical ideas about human nature, sin, salvation, and ultimate justice.

Worldview

What is a worldview? Everyone has a worldview. It is the framework from which we view reality and make sense of life and the world. Our worldview becomes the driving force behind every emotion, decision and action. The question to consider is not whether you have a worldview, but rather, is your worldview true?

Some worldviews are incoherent, being merely a smorgasbord, or mix and match worldview. Barna research concluded that 88% of people have a worldview that is not internally consistent, meaning it is not coherent with itself. An examined and thoughtful worldview, however, is more than a private personal viewpoint; it is a comprehensive life system that seeks to answer the basic questions of life:

Is there a “God”?
How did we get here?
What is the purpose of life?
What went wrong with the world?
What is right and what is wrong?
What is our destiny?

What is a biblical worldview?

A Christian worldview is not just one’s personal faith expression, nor is it just a theory. It is an all-consuming way of living, applicable to all spheres of life. A biblical worldview is based on the infallible Word of God. When you believe the Bible is entirely true, then you allow it to be the foundation of everything you say and do. It involves loving God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30-31). This kind of love for God results in taking every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ ( 2 Cor. 10:5 ), and a wholehearted devotion to distinctively Christian thinking. It means being able to see life from a Christian vantage point; it means thinking with the mind of Christ.

A biblical worldview changes the way we respond to major events in the world and also day-to-day incidents. How do you respond to a national pandemic or political unrest? How do you respond to traffic? What do you do if your fast food order is wrong? What do you do when your boss asks you to lie? While those with a secular worldview may have their worldview shaken after a disaster, a Christian will respond with trust in God’s sovereignty, confidence in Christ’s future return, and passion for spreading the gospel. Through everything we continually look for God’s greatness, goodness, and wisdom.

Why is a biblical worldview important?

A biblical worldview is important because it is the only true worldview. If we reject God’s word, we fail to see the world as it really is. A worldview might be compared to a pair of glasses. If you have broken or discolored lenses or the wrong prescription, you won’t see the world correctly. A biblical worldview shows you the world as God, the Creator of it, intended. Everyone loves having perfect vision, and when it comes to seeing the world, it is no different. Sin, however, has distorted our view but looking at life with a biblical worldview corrects our vision and helps us see the world through the theme of God’s redemption.

The challenge of competing worldviews

The problem is that non-biblical worldview ideas don’t just sit in a book somewhere waiting for people to examine them. They bombard us constantly from television, film, music, newspapers, magazines, books and academia. Because we live in a selfish, fallen world, these ideas seductively appeal to our flesh, and we often end up incorporating them into our personal worldview — often without even knowing it. Barna research has been tracking this ongoing shift away from a Christian worldview. Brooke Hempell, senior vice president of research for Barna, says, “The challenge with competing worldviews is that there are fragments of similarities to some Christian teachings, and some may recognize and latch on to these ideas, not realizing they are distortions of biblical truths. The call for the Church, and its teachers and thinkers, is to help Christians dissect popular beliefs before allowing them to settle in their own ideology. Informed thinking is essential to developing and maintaining a healthy biblical worldview and faith as well as being able to have productive dialogue with those who espouse other beliefs.” As Colossians 2:8 says “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”

How to instill a biblical worldview in your children

Children should be prepared to navigate the tidal wave of unbiblical ideas that confront them as they grow older. We want them to know what they believe and why they believe it. We want them to know Scripture. So how do you help your kids to think biblically?

Begin at a young age! Look for age-appropriate resources that address issues that your kids are currently facing.
Teach them that Scripture impacts every area of life, even math and science. The reality is that God’s word impacts everything!
As a parent or guardian, live out your faith and belief in front of them. Teach by example!
Find a community of like-minded believers that reinforce the biblical worldview you teach at home.
Give your children opportunities to practice living out a biblical worldview such as activities that involve caring for, or serving others.
Consider your language. Do your words reveal God’s wisdom, care and love. e.g., “Here’s what I think” vs “Let’s see what the Bible says about this question” or “There’s no way we can pay all our bills this month” vs “Let’s pray and trust God to provide for our needs.”

Since a person’s worldview is primarily shaped and is firmly in place by the time someone reaches the age of thirteen it is imperative that parents and other influencers are intentional in how they help develop the worldview of children. Since most of a child’s day is spent at school, it’s important to consider the influence a school has on his or her life. The school environment has a great impact on how a child develops and Christian education can make a huge difference in your child’s life.

What is Christian education?

Faith West Academy will provide an environment where faculty, staff, and students will understand “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence” (II Peter 1:3). This is our mission statement: Excellence Without Compromise: Excellence is fulfilling each student’s God-given potential. Compromise is anything other than God’s design.

The goal of any school is to educate children about life, the world, and their purpose in it. Christian education seeks to teach children about the world God created, how our faith is woven into each area of learning, and how to find purpose and meaning through God’s Will for our life. We believe that only through an understanding of God, His Word, and His works, can we know the truth and show His love to those around us.

Christian education isn’t just having a Bible/religion class in addition to normal classes, but an integration of a biblical worldview into every area of study. In a science class, students may learn about how God’s handiwork is seen in the natural laws and design of the world; in physical education, they may learn about setting a Christ-like example both on and off the field. Through these experiences, students learn that following God isn’t limited to one area of life.

Consider this example: for most families, church is once a week. As a result, we can unknowingly infer that we only learn about God once a week. With a Christian education, children learn that God doesn’t only exist on Sunday, but is constantly at work in the world each day. A Christian school seeks to build on what’s taught at church and in the home. Building a faith that exists outside of the church and home is essential to establishing a deep and mature spiritual foundation later in life. What if we can’t afford a Christian education?

The fact of the matter is that private schooling isn’t cheap. It makes more sense, from a strictly financial point of view, to consider public education instead, seeing as we already pay school taxes. Many families appreciate what a Christian school has to offer but hesitate to apply due to the financial commitment.

We believe that if it is God’s will that your children attend a Christian school, He will make a way. This may sound a bit cliché, but it’s true. It may mean unexpected income, such as a bonus or a raise at work, or it could mean learning to cut back on certain expenses. A scholarship or financial support could be available through your church. For those families who qualify and apply, FWA will provide financial aid. The opportunities for provision are there. Our God owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50), and he owns the hills, too.

Choosing a school is a big decision any way you look at it. The right school will encourage your child to succeed and enrich his/her understanding of God. We know “…train up a child in the way he should go” is a directive in scripture (Proverbs 22:6). Ultimately, our hope and prayer are that God guides your family to make the decision that will best help your child grow in the way he or she should go.

Can’t Christians go to public schools and turn out fine?

Indeed, they can. Just because a school is public doesn’t mean it can’t provide a good education and teachers who care about their students. However, keep in mind that the goal of the public school is to educate according to the world’s standards and beliefs. As stated earlier, Christian schools integrate Christian morals and principles into each class. The whole atmosphere of a Christian school is one that both promotes and points students to the love of Christ. What’s more, every teacher will seek to help your child grow, both academically and in their walk with Christ.

Christian schools hold students to both a higher level of academic achievement as well as accountability in their walk with God. They are challenged to achieve their fullest potential in school and aren’t just seen as a number. From a spiritual standpoint, they are encouraged to grow in their faith and ask questions that help them understand why they believe what they believe.

The Barna Group, a faith-based research company, recently found that many church leaders in both Protestant and Catholic churches see public schools as a negative influence on a child’s faith. Ultimately, they concluded,

“Clergy view parents, churches, and Christian communities as positive influences on a child’s spiritual formation and development. However, children are spending most of their daytime weekday hours at school, which is perceived by many church leaders as a negative influence on a child’s spiritual formation. In fact, schools are ranked alongside a child’s friends and peers as primarily negative influences—a view held by 61 percent of Protestant leaders and 65 percent of Catholic leaders. In some cases, the perceived negative influence of a child’s school or friend group outweighs a perceived positive influence by double.”

“While it is great that some churches have partnered with or served at local public schools for the purposes of outreach, the decision of where a Christian parent should send their child to school should take into account the whole-person formation of the child,” Brooke Hempell, Barna’s senior vice president of research, says. “And if public schools are perceived to have a negative influence on the spiritual formation of a child, parents need guidance on how to navigate this decision.”

Shouldn’t we as Christians be “salt and light” in the public schools and not shelter them from the “real world”?

A Christian school shouldn’t seek to shelter its students from the world, but rather teach them how to transform it. Just as churches equip Christians to learn about God and show His love to others, a Christian school allows for a more hands-on approach to this purpose. A Christian education trains students to understand the truth in the Bible and then share their faith confidently with others. Learning how to defend their faith and effectively share the Gospel is what will allow people to change the world through Christ.

We’re all human, and regardless of our background or upbringing, we all need to experience the love of Christ. Children in a Christian school are no different. They can experience the same issues and have the same questions as those in a public school can. The difference is that in a Christian school, the focus of education is to draw students into a deeper and fuller understanding of God and the world He created. This, coupled with the Christian witness of the teachers, encourages students to ask the important questions and work through issues in a way that is pleasing to God and sets them up for long-term success.
