2019-2020 Band Calendar

What to Expect

“Music is characteristic of heaven, is everywhere in the universe to praise God. Music is one of God’s gifts to us. God made man’s voice, the most complex of instruments and gave him the ability to invent musical instruments and made the materials from which instruments are made. God established the principles by which sound works, and which govern music. God enables men to write music and words. God made man with a responsiveness to music. Music has both a vertical and a horizontal function. Our use of music should be for the glory of God and should be tempered by its effect on others and our concern for them. God is pleased with excellence in musical performance which is done for His glory.  (From Encyclopedia of Bible Truths by Ruth C. Haycock; Music Fine Arts/Health)

Band at Faith West Academy is available for students in grades 5 through 12. The thinking is to take the time to pray with students, parents, and teacher about the instrument that the Lord would have a student play. It is the Lord who knows how He wants to use the talent and gift for playing an instrument 10, 20, or 50 years later.

Our goal in Band is to develop musical and spiritual maturity and give praise to the Lord in all we do. The students develop a close bond and count each other not only as friends, but as family. Our Bible verse this year is “So…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade is the first year students may begin playing an instrument in Beginning Band. Students will choose an instrument during the Spring semester of 4th grade or during the first week of school in 5th grade. Beginning Band meets four days a week and students bring their instruments home every day to practice. The only after school requirements are a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert.

Sixth Grade

Sixth Grade students move up to Intermediate Band, where they continue to master their instrument. They meet every day for class. After school requirements include a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert.

Seventh and Eighth Grade

Seventh and Eighth Grade students become the Junior High Band and are required to play with the Senior High Band at football games, pep rallies, etc.

A Personal Note from Mrs. Maxwell:

My musical career started with a prayer request. I prayed for piano lessons when I was six years old. God answered that prayer and, just like that, I was in love with music! Growing up I was always fascinated with the sound of wind instruments, so it was no surprise when I wanted to join the band. In sixth grade I was chosen to play trombone because I had long arms that allowed me to reach 6th position and I could already play low Bb, F, and high Bb. I earned a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from Stephen F. Austin State University. While studying at SFASU I was graduate assistant and was a member of various ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Pep Band, chamber music groups, musicals, and the faculty brass quintet.

In 1995 I was hired to be the Assistant Band Director at Spring Forest Middle School in Spring Branch ISD. Ironically, this is the same school where Mr. Turner started his teaching career! After ten years at Spring Forest, I taught private lessons in surrounding school districts and then had my daughter, Molly. I was blessed to be a stay-at-home Mommy through her Kindergarten year in 2012-2013. During her time in first grade I went back to teaching lessons again during her school day. In the Spring of 2014 I began looking for the perfect job and God led me right to Faith West Academy.

It is so exciting to be working in a Godly environment where our classes are guided by God’s Word. Learning to play an instrument and playing in an ensemble is an amazing experience. Students learn so many life lessons: discipline, perseverance, responsibility, how to manage stage fright,  concentration, and even strengthen the math and language centers in the brain. Applying scripture to these life lessons reinforces the importance of God’s Word in our everyday lives. Of course the sheer enjoyment of the music itself is priceless! Making music is truly a gift from God and we want to honor Him in all we do.
