May 17, 2008 Katy, Texas
Nearly 600 riders participated in the second annual Pedaling the Prairie, a non-competitive bike ride, held Saturday, May 17, 2008. Bicycle enthusiasts (along with some rollerbladers) took to a well-mapped course ranging from family friendly 10-15 mile rides to the 100-mile endurance ride. Mr. Dag Blokkum, Ride Marshall, announced to the riders this morning; “Unfortunately I have some bad news. What was previously advertised as a one hundred mile course, because of construction, it is now a 107 mile ride.” This announcement was met with cheers from the enthusiastic riders and they were ready for a wonderful ride day with temperatures that ranged from 59° to 69°.
The ride began at Katy Mills Mall Sun & Ski parking lot and took different routes around the Katy, Fulshear, Simonton, San Felipe, and Bellville areas. The ride provided an experience of the prairie, rolling meadows, some hills, and rural flatland of the area.
Pedaling the Prairie is presented by Sun & Ski Sports to benefit the athletic department of Faith West Academy. Faith West Academy is a private, Christian school in Katy, Texas. Established over 25 years ago, Faith West offers an excellent academic alternative to public education. Offering extra-curricular activities, such as athletics, enriches each student’s experience and affords them the opportunity to unite with others in a team capacity.
